Invidious web

Article Abstract:

The Internet has been hailed as offering people the chance to gain access to a wide range of information and as increasing freedom of speech. In fact, it has mainly attracted people who seem to take pleasure in being abusive. Natural self-control tends to disappear when people communicate via the Internet, and most of the discussion on the Internet is boring and misguided. Communicating in this way tends to make people more isolated, rather than bringing them closer together.

The big sleep

Article Abstract:

The content of the debates at the recent 1996 RCN Congress was generally lacking in any real interest. It appears that many nurses are unable to present a convincing argument, and there is a tendency to continually focus on issues which have lost their immediacy. At the attached job fair and exhibition, the stalls very generally very dull, and there was a strong sense that little real effort had been made.

Sweet talk

Article Abstract:

It is clear that some health professionals in the UK fail to communicate properly with patients. They give information, but do not listen to the patient's views. Some units and trusts are now attempting to improve this situation, and are taking action to ensure that staff are more accessible. It has been found that treating patients with more consideration can actually bring benefits for staff.
