Is curettage needed for uncomplicated incomplete spontaneous abortion?

Article Abstract:

Uterine curettage following uncomplicated incomplete spontaneous abortions may be unnecessary. Historically, a surgical evacuation of the uterus has been recommended to prevent infections and reduce bleeding from retained fetal material. Studies of conservative management, using antibiotics and observation as necessary, may reduce the incidence of uterine perforation and other complications of curettage. Larger research trials may establish that women with stable vital signs and no signs of infection may forego surgical curettage following a miscarriage.

Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of vaginal misoprostol for management of early pregnancy failures

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine whether misoprostol medical management of early pregnancy failure was more effective than expectant management. The findings suggest that misoprostol appears to be highly effective for treating early pregnancy failures, with few side effects and high patient satisfaction.

A comparison of the psychologic impact and client satisfaction of surgical treatment with medical treatment of spontaneous abortion: a randomized controlled trial

Article Abstract:

Many women in Hong Kong who have a miscarriage prefer to take misoprostol to expel the dead fetus rather than having a D & C. This can spare women from having an invasive procedure during a time of grief.
