Is the prostate pill finally here?

Article Abstract:

Benign prostatic hypertrophy is enlargement of the prostate gland that is not caused by growth of a tumor. This disorder is common among older men and causes complications such as obstruction of the urethra, or the tube that carries urine from the bladder. Men with benign prostatic hypertrophy may undergo surgery to remove their prostate gland if they are experiencing severe symptoms. Benign prostatic hypertrophy may be caused by dihydrotestosterone, a hormone formed from testosterone in a reaction catalyzed by the enzyme 5alpha-reductase. A research study found that men with decreased levels of 5alpha-reductase do not develop benign prostatic hypertrophy later in life. Another study found that finasteride, a drug that inhibits the activity of 5alpha-reductase, may be an effective treatment for benign prostatic hypertrophy. The effects of long-term treatment with finasteride are not known.

Medical management of benign prostatic hyperplasia -- are two drugs better than one?

Article Abstract:

More research is needed before doctors should recommend treating prostate enlargement with two drugs, an alpha blocker and finasteride. A study published in 2003 found that two drugs might be better than one. However, another study showed that finasteride might reduce the risk of prostate cancer, but cancer that developed might be more severe.
