Seniors may hold the wild card on Medicare reform

Article Abstract:

Both Republicans and Democrats will initiate programs seeking the support of senior citizens for their Medicare reform agendas. The elderly, who number about 30 million strong, are the most powerful voting block in the US. However, it is not yet clear which of the reform packages senior citizens are likely to adopt. Additionally, organizations representing the elderly are also involved in the reform debate. Republicans have proposed a plan that would decrease Medicare costs by $270 billion through the year 2002.

Pulling for a piece of the health care market

Article Abstract:

The Coalition for Quality Care and Competition will work to insure that nonphysician providers are given an expanded role in a new healthcare system. Nonphysicians maintain that they can provide primary care at a lower cost than physicians. Physicians counter that these professionals will only endanger patients. The healthcare reform prospects of nurses, physicians' assistants, optometrists, mental health professionals, chiropractors and physical therapists are examined.
