Ankylosing spondylitis in West Africans - evidence for a non-HLA-B27 protective effect

Article Abstract:

People in the Fula tribe in Gambia may carry some factor protecting them from ankylosing spondylitis. Blood samples and x-rays were examined for evidence of or tendencies toward developing ankylosing spondylitis among 900 adult Fula males and 215 relatives of B27-positive tribe members. Genetic markers typically associated with ankylosing spondylitis among Caucasian populations are present in the 6% of tribe members that are HLA B27 positive. The prevalence of genetic markers, B*2705 and B*2703, was 68% and 32%, respectively. However, none of these people had ankylosing spondylitis. The statistical likelihood of this happening is rare.

Sister chromatid exchange analysis in the lymphocytes of patients with ankylosing spondylitis

Article Abstract:

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) may be a result of a defective DNA repair process. AS is caused by an inflammation of the spinal column and other joints. Researchers blood samples from 15 AS patients and 15 healthy volunteers and analyzed the chromosomes to determine the rate of sister chromatid exchange (SCE). SCE is a way of measuring DNA damage. The chromosomes of the AS patients had a higher rate of SCE than the chromosomes of the healthy group. This indicates that these patients have a greater amount of DNA damage, which could contribute to the disease.
