Just lip-service?

Article Abstract:

Effective self-advocacy by mental health users is limited by poor resources, inadequate communication skills and lack of confidence. Mental health professionals fail to listen to users due to preconceptions of mental illness. Users need training in communication skills. Professionals should recognise users as experts in mental health. Improved services could develop from a partnership between user representatives and open-minded professionals.

Just another suicide

Article Abstract:

Uncaring attitudes by psychiatric nurses resulted in an elderly woman's suicide. Only one nurse took responsibility for the woman as others regarded her as difficult and offered no support. No change in attitude followed an unsuccessful suicide attempt. Her second successful attempt was treated in a similarly uncaring way. The lack of professionalism of some psychiatric nurses is frustrating to those who wish to raise standards.

Dr Cox: the nurse's story

Article Abstract:

Nursing sister Roisin Hart has suffered harassment for reporting the mercy killing of Lillian Boyes by Nigel Cox. Hart considered the United Kingdom Cental Council (UKCC) code of conduct obliged her to take action. However, she regrets that the UKCC has not been more supportive in a difficult situation. She stands by her decision but considers action necessary to prevent persecution of others in a similar situation.
