Keen edge

Article Abstract:

The general secretary of the Community and District Nursing Association, Ann Kenn, is a nurse who is now campaigning to be elected as the Labour Party Member of Parliament (MP) for Brentford and Isleworth, UK. The seat is presently held by the Conservatives who have a majority of only 2,086. This will be the third time the nurse has campaigned to be elected to this particular seat and she is confident that she will win it this time. Her husband is already an MP and her sister is also campaigning in another constituency.

Decent disclosure

Article Abstract:

The introduction of the Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998 is expected to afford more protection for UK medical staff who report cases of malpractice against colleagues. The act will encourage staff to report colleagues who are failing to carry out their duties, without the fear of being victimized for doing so. The act was introduced after it was found many workers knew of malpractice but were too afraid to come forward. The act is aimed at protecting staff when allegations are made on an internal basis.

Working to rules

Article Abstract:

Trade unions for nurses are considering ways of taking industrial action against the 1% national pay award. Nursing unions have a no-strike policy. The Conservatives have restricted strike action by nurses, health visitors and midwives greatly. However, NHS staff could take action by working to rule or withdrawing their goodwill.
