Keeping a high profile: ward sisters

Article Abstract:

Ward sisters are having to assume a high profile as NHS reforms give them the opportunity to become involved in management decisions, extending their influence outside their own wards. If the great influence that ward sisters now have at clinical level is to be recognised, ward sisters must be able to convey the importance of nurses' contribution to the hospital organisation. While being assertive in putting forward their arguments and communicating their needs, ward sisters should make the effort to understand the role of other departments and establish good communications with them.

What is psoriasis?

Article Abstract:

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition which is not contagious. The skin becomes scaly, flaky and covered in scabs. It normally affects only a part of the body, often the scalp or joint areas, but it can occasionally cover the whole body. The cause of psoriasis is unknown, but triggers include stress, throat infections and the use of some drugs. Treatments include the application of steroid and coal tar creams. Sunlight is also good for psoriasis, and some patients find immersion in mineral salt solutions very helpful.
