Article Abstract:

Wound exudate can cause problems if it is excessive, and appropriate dressings are required if skin maceration is to be avoided. Nurses should take note of the depth and shape of the wound, where it is and also look for signs of infection. Dressings must keep the wound moist, stay in place, be removed easily and help to reduce infection. Film dressings are unsuitable because they do not absorb exudate. Primary and secondary dressings can be used together, and the dressings should be checked regularly for efficiency. It is also important to monitor the amount of exudate from a wound.

Silver dressings: Absorption and antibacterial efficacy

Article Abstract:

Sustained silver-release dressings are well established in the management of acute and chronic wounds and burns and the dressings differ greatly in their total silver content, patters of silver ion release and presumed therapeutic action. Exudate and wound fluid trigger the release of 'activated' silver ions for antibacterial action and to neutralize any toxins and the dressings liberate more silver than is required for bactericidal action.
