Laser hair removal

Article Abstract:

The FDA has approved the use of a long-pulse ruby laser to remove unwanted hair. Formerly called EpiLaser, it is now called E2000. It is most effective in people with dark hair because it affects the melanin in the hair follicle. The melanin absorbs the laser energy, which creates heat that damages the follicle. Blond, red, and gray hair do not contain much melanin. Side effects include pain, redness, swelling, and blistering. The procedure appears to be safe and less painful than electrolysis but no long-term studies are available.

Cosmetic surgery with lasers

Article Abstract:

Laser surgery can safely and effectively improve many skin problems, such as scars, tattoos, and discolorations. Such an effect may not be permanent, however. The sharply focused light beam destroys selected tissue or pigment without damaging surrounding tissues. While laser surgery improves warts, stretch marks, and acne, the benefit on facial wrinkles may be short-lived and the laser-generated heat causes often lasting redness of the skin. Removing excess hair via laser technique requires further evaluation.
