Left-sided laparoscopic para-aortic lymphadenectomy: anatomy of the ventral tributaries of the infrarenal vena cava

Article Abstract:

Most of the small blood vessels extending from the vena cava are in the region of the bifurcation and the inferior mesenteric artery. Researchers noted the distribution of tributary vessels of the vena cava during laparoscopic surgery procedures in 112 patients. Eighty-two percent of vena caval tributaries were in the region of the large vein where it divides, and 17% were near the inferior mesenteric artery. Knowledge of this distribution may assist surgeons to avoid the vessels during laparoscopic surgery.

Value of laparoscopic evaluation of paraaortic and pelvic lymph nodes for treatment of cervical cancer

Article Abstract:

Laparoscopy can be used to examine lymph nodes in patients with cervical cancer. This technique is minimally invasive and can magnify nodes so they are easier to see. Researchers used laparoscopy on 84 women with cervical cancer and also removed the lymph nodes to examine them microscopically. Laparoscopy was 92% effective in identifying cancer that had metastasized to the lymph nodes. Laparoscopy could also be used to remove cancerous lymph nodes rather than subjecting the patient to conventional surgery.

Intraoperative clinical evaluation of lymph nodes in women with gynecologic cancer

Article Abstract:

Surgeons should have a trained pathologist examine any lymph nodes removed from women with gynecologic cancer. In a study of 178 women, 26% of the nodes examined by a surgeon were incorrectly considered to be free of cancer. In other words, it was a false-negative result.
