Lessons of a century

Article Abstract:

The first school nurse, Amy Hughes, was appointed in 1892 after compulsory schooling raised an awareness of child health problems. Primary concern was with nutrition and cleanliness. The 1918 Education Act prompted the development of a school health service which provided a complete social pediatric service. The 1973 National Health Service Reorganisation Act amalgamated school medical services with community services and school nurses were taken out of the control of local authorities. In 1978 a recognised school nursing qualification was established.

Beating bedtime blues

Article Abstract:

It is essential to maintain regular personal contact with patients who are confined to bed because of pressure-relieving treatment. Many patients can feel isolated and useless because they loose the ability to move about and have to rely on others. Psychological effects may cause patients to begin suffering from low self-esteem, which can be overcome by constant reassurance from nurses. Diversion tactics are an ideal way to reduce stress levels, while ensuring patients are kept fully informed about their treatment.

Health visiting revisited

Article Abstract:

Health visitors are having to redefine their position as professional community health workers as the UK National Health Service focuses on meeting market needs. Many health visitors are looking at an 'ethical and professional dilemma,' according to a discussion paper by the Health Visitors' Assn and the United Kingdom Standing Conference on Health Visitor Education. Most health visitors will not be concerned about a review of skill mix, provided their numbers are not reduced.
