Levalbuterol for asthma

Article Abstract:

The FDA has approved levalbuterol for the treatment of asthma. Sold under the trade name Xopenex, it is believed to be safer than other forms of albuterol. It is the R-isomer of albuterol, whereas most forms of albuterol contain both the R-isomer and the S-isomer. However, only the R-isomer can dilate bronchial tubes. Levalbuterol belongs to a class of drugs called short-acting beta agonists. These drugs are administered as a nebulized solution. Studies have shown that levalbuterol is no more effective than other forms of albuterol.

Albuterol, a beta agonist found to have potent effects on the muscle size increase in livestock, is linked with strength gains that are not necessarily associated with weight gains in humans. The drug was shown to speed up recovery from delayed-onset muscle soreness.
