Liability premiums up 26-27% in New York; some doubts remain

Article Abstract:

After much study and debate New York Superintendent of Insurance, Albert Lewis, decided to approve a 26.6% increase in physicians liability insurance premiums. Medical Mutual Liability Insurance Co. and Medical Malpractice Insurance Association wanted increases far greater than 26.6%. Charges are coming from these companies that politics, instead of finances, dominated Mr. Lewis's decisions.

MDs take issue to legislature

Article Abstract:

Physicians in New York descended on the state capital to press their case concerning proposed increases in medical malpractice insurance rates. The physicians maintain that quick legislative and executive action are needed to avert higher health care costs and diminished availability of physicians' services.
