Lichen planus: exploring its malignant potential

Article Abstract:

Lichen planus (LP) can cause the development of different types of malignancies in the mucous membrane of the mouth. This disorder is an inflammatory condition that affects the skin and the mucous membrane of the mouth. It lasts approximately 45 months and affects women more often than men. It is characterized by the formation of lesions in the mouth and less often on the skin. Eight patients with LP developed different types of malignancies. The malignancy was found in five patients at the time of their diagnosis with LP. One patient was diagnosed with a malignancy seven years after diagnosis with LP and another 24 years after diagnosis with LP. Three patients were diagnosed with a verrucous carcinoma and three others with a squamous cell carcinoma. Advanced premalignant lesions were found in the two other patients.

Improving detection of precancerous and cancerous oral lesions: computer-assisted analysis of the oral brush biopsy

Article Abstract:

OralCDx appears to be capable of detecting precancerous lesions in the mouth that are hard to detect using other methods. This diagnostic kit produced by OralScan Laboratories, Inc. contains a specially designed biopsy brush, glass slide, fixative solution, pouch and a container with the company's address. All specimens were analyzed by computer at OralScan and also analyzed microscopically at the dentist's institution. The kit detected all cases of cancer and ruled out cancer over 90% of the time. It even identified precancerous lesions that would have been diagnosed as benign.
