Life and death decisions about babies' treatment

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to find out what doctors and nurses feel about the practice of denying or stopping treatment for very sick babies in intensive care units, and also what criteria are used to make these decisions. Nurses have the most contact with these babies and their experiences should be valued. Many nurses feel that treatment is continued for longer than is desirable because the long term prognosis for the babies is poor, however, nurses' views are frequently ignored. Nurses need to tackle these moral issues and be accountable for what happens on their wards.

The right stuff

Article Abstract:

Project 2000 and the joint study by the Institute of Medical Ethics and the RCN highlights the belieft that the teaching of ethics is necessary during basic training. Ethics courses should help to develop character traits such as an ability to consider a situation from a patients' perspective, to respect patients and an understanding that illness has both physical and psychosocial implications.
