Lipid let loose in pulmonary emphysema

Article Abstract:

A research reveals that lipid mediator ceramide mediates apoptosis of cells in the lungs of mice leading to pulmonary emphysema and ceramide is upregulated in the lungs of patients with bronchitis and emphysema. It is found that the lungs from individuals with this disease have an increase in the number and size of mucus-secreting glands, a condition called mucus metaplasia.

Hyperoxia causes angiopoietin Z-mediated acute lung injury and necrotic cell death

Article Abstract:

The expression of angiopoietins during hyperoxic acute lung injury (ALI) and the effects of hyperoxia in mice that produces angiopoietin 2 (Ang2) were characterized to find out whether Ang2 plays a critical role in the pathogeneis of hyperoxic ALI. It was found that Ang2 is a mediator of epithelial necrosis with an important role in hyperoxic ALI and pulmonary edema.

Ceramide upregulation causes pulmonary cell apoptosis and emphysema-like disease in mice

Article Abstract:

A study reveals that ceramide, a second messenger lipid, is a crucial mediator of destruction in emphysema. Increased lung ceramides in individuals with smoking-induced emphysema suggest that ceramide upregulation may be a crucial pathogenic element and a promising target in this disease that lacks effective therapies.
