Long-term benefit of primary angioplasty as compared with thrombolytic therapy for acute myocardial infarction

Article Abstract:

When treating heart attack patients, coronary angioplasty appears to be better than thrombolytic drugs in the long term as well as the short term. These are both methods for opening clogged arteries. Researchers followed 395 heart attack patients who were randomly assigned to one treatment or the other for up to five years. Those who received angioplasty had lower death rates, lower rates of a second heart attack, and lower rates of hospital admission for chest pain or heart failure. Angioplasty also led to lower medical costs compared to thrombolytic therapy.

A comparison of coronary angioplasty with fibrinolytic therapy in acute myocardial infarction

Article Abstract:

Patients with symptoms of a heart attack who are admitted to a community hospital that cannot do angioplasty should be transferred to a larger hospital that can, according to a study of 1,572 patients. This should be done because angioplasty is more effective than drugs that break up blood clots even when treatment is delayed because of the transfer. However, the patient should be transferred in two hours or less if possible.
