Long-term effects of cesarean sections: ectopic pregnancies and placental problems

Article Abstract:

A history of cesarean section may predispose women to subsequent ectopic pregnancy and placental dysfunction. Researchers in Finland compared 16,938 women who had had a cesarean delivery to a similar number of women with vaginal deliveries. Women experienced fewer completed pregnancies after a cesarean delivery. Cesarean delivery was associated with slightly higher rates of subsequent ectopic pregnancy and with much higher rates of premature detachment of the placenta. Higher rates of placenta previa were found among women whose first child was delivered by cesarean section. The risks associated with cesarean delivery should especially be considered for women pregnant with their first child, as cesarean delivery may affect the health of future pregnancies.
