Lupus "gatekeeper" gene discovered

Article Abstract:

Findings reveal that the restoration of the levels of receptors coded by a single 'gatekeeper' gene could halt the development of lupus in mice. An inhibitory Fc receptor that plays a critical role in the ability of the immune system to distinguish between self and nonself in the mouse was identified, and found that even partial restoration of the receptor's function prevented the development of lupus in several lupus-prone mouse strains.

Scientists seek cause of drug craving

Article Abstract:

Repeated administration of psychoactive drugs such as cocaine and amphetamine and corresponding reduction in glutamate mediated communication between glutamate receptors and cell signaling in the nucleus accumbens play a role in drug-craving. A study on a rat model suggested that a reduced number of glutamate receptors in the nucleus accumbens caused by repeated drug exposure account for drug-craving behavior.
