MRSA 2000

Article Abstract:

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) can be present harmlessly on the skin or in the wound of any patient. However, it can spark off clinical infection in vulnerable patients, and can cause endocarditis, osteomyelitis and pneumonia. Serious MRSA infections are both difficult and costly to treat. At present, MRSA treatment is restricted to the use of the glycopeptide group of antibiotics. These need close monitoring, as they are connected with renal toxicity. The key way to prevent the spread of MRSA in hospitals is through decontaminating the hands after patient contact.
