Article Abstract:

Nurses considering managerial career development should be aware of the scarcity of opportunity in middle management, the administrative orientation of many higher grade posts and the clinical career structure. Nurse should demonstrate their suitability for posts in job applications. Many higher grade posts specify communication skills and creativity. Interviews may include psychometric testing, presentations or trials to ascertain suitability for a post.

Growing pains

Article Abstract:

A careers workshop in Scotland has drawn attention to possible problems encountered by nurses changing from clinical to management posts. Colleagues' negative attitudes proved detrimental to transition. Participants also complaind about lack of senior management support and confusion surrounding newly created posts. Suggestions for easing transition included support from a mentor and employer in developing new skills.
