Managed addiction

Article Abstract:

The application of the managed care approach to substance abuse care is driving innovation in treatment strategies while controlling costs, but it also threatens the quality of care. Even as managed care places restrictions on treatment approaches, greater opportunity exists for customized care linked with accountability which has helped to focus treatment regimens. While the result of managed care treatment approaches is evaluated, some risk to quality of care together with adequate access is of concern to some in the industry.

Ultimate affront?

Article Abstract:

The medical community is uniting in protest of ultimate fighting. The sport, which pits fighters in free-for-all fighting matches, is watched by up to 300,000 American households on pay-per-view stations. Ultimate Fighting Championship organizers claim that they have implemented several measures, such as mandatory AIDS testing of fighters and ringside physicians, to make the sport more safe. Several states are considering banning the sport entirely.
