Management fads?

Article Abstract:

National Health Service managers are adopting concepts of job evaluation and performance related pay (PRP) in nursing assessment. However, many professionals consider them inappropriate management gimmicks and feel cost and compexities will limit their application. Job evaluation may undermine the clinical grading system of nurses. Research reports have also questioned the relevance of performance related pay in the public sector. Adminstration costs will be high and women may be disadvantaged. Both concepts threaten to lower morale and reduce efficiency.

Misused authority

Article Abstract:

The number of nurses charged by the United Kingdom Central Council professional conduct committee with abusing management authority is increasing. About 34 charges against nurse managers in 1991-1992 compares with 14 in 1990-1991. Poor management skills may be the cause. Nurse managers are insufficiently educated to transfer to managerial roles. Training would help them with positive problem solving.
