Management of anticoagulation before and after elective surgery

Article Abstract:

Detailed recommendations are presented for discontinuing anticoagulant treatment in patients who are having surgery. People with atrial fibrillation, artificial heart valves or a history of abnormal blood clotting often have to take anticoagulants regularly. However, the treatment must be stopped several days before surgery. This could put these patients at risk of blood clots. The consequences of blood clots obstructing blood vessels can be very serious but so can bleeding caused by excessive anticoagulation.

Evaluation of D-dimer in the diagnosis of suspected deep-vein thrombosis

Article Abstract:

A blood test called the D-dimer test can identify patients who have a low risk of deep-vein thrombosis and eliminate the need for an ultrasound scan. In a study of 1,096 patients who were thought to have deep-vein thrombosis, 39% of the 566 patients who had a D-dimer test did not need to have an ultrasound scan. Only two of these patients developed deep-vein thrombosis compared to six patients who had an ultrasound scan. Deep-vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in the large veins in the legs.
