Management of severe ulcer rebleeding

Article Abstract:

Endoscopic surgery may be more effective than general surgery for the treatment of recurring upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Over half the patients with this condition have a peptic ulcer. During endoscopic surgery, a flexible tube with an electrode is inserted into the stomach. The electrode heats and seals the arteries, which stops the bleeding. A 1999 study found that endoscopic surgery was not as effective as general surgery in treating patients who continued to bleed after treatment with endoscopic surgery. However, the complication rate was much lower in patients who received endoscopic surgery.

Urgent colonoscopy for the diagnosis and treatment of severe diverticular hemorrhage

Article Abstract:

Colonoscopy can be used to treat diverticular hemorrhage. Diverticular hemorrhage is bleeding from diverticula, which are small pockets in the gastrointestinal tract that can become inflamed. In a study of 121 patients hospitalized with gastrointestinal bleeding from the rectum, immediate colonoscopy revealed that almost one-fourth had active bleeding from a diverticula. All the patients with active diverticular hemorrhage were treated endoscopically with epinephrine injections or coagulation. None of these patients experienced recurring bleeding and none required surgery.

The role of endoscopy in managing acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding

Article Abstract:

Colonoscopy should be used early in assessing patients with gastrointestinal bleeding. During colonoscopy, a flexible tube is inserted into the rectum so the doctor can examine the colon. Colonoscopy is usually used to diagnose gastrointestinal diseases. A 1999 study showed that colonoscopy could be used even in patients who were bleeding and in these cases, it could be used to treat the bleeding. Patients who were treated in this way stopped bleeding and had no recurrence of bleeding.
