Management of suspected bacterial urinary tract infection

Article Abstract:

The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) has given new set of guidelines for managing a supposed bacterial urinary tract infection in adults. The guidelines states that the presence of bacteriuria should lead to antibiotic treatment only when there is definitive evidence that eradicating the bacterial infection would result in a tangible health gain at a reasonable level of risk.

Tackling latex allergies in patients and nursing staff

Article Abstract:

The latex contained in some medical equipment such as gloves can result in an allergic reaction. A new report from the National Patient Safety Agency looks into the response from National Health Service organization to the threat from latex allergies and whether adequate measures are taken to protect health care staff and patients.

Antibiotic resistance and the prescribing dilemma

Antibiotics are very effective in curing infectious diseases, ever since the discovery of penicillin. However, their widespread use has led to the emergence of antibiotic resistant organisms and hence prescribers are facing a dilemma.
