Managing a patient with an infected pacemaker site

Article Abstract:

Infection and septicaemia are among a number of known complications of pacemakers. In the case of a 64-year-old man who had a pacemaker fitted in 1992, a routine operation to repair a right inguinal hernia led to the pacemaker becoming infected. It is possible that bacteria from an infected cannula site reached the pacemaker, forming an abscess over the left pectoral pacemaker site. Antibiotic treatment failed to clear the infection, and it was necessary to remove the pacemaker. Great care was need to ensure that the wound healed, and the patient also required nutritional advice.

Managing extravasation injuries in preterm neonates

Article Abstract:

Premature babies are at significant risk of suffering tissue damage as a result of the intravenous therapy they need. A number of strategies have been developed for reducing the risk of extravasation injury in preterm neonates, including placing central lines for administering total parenteral nutrition. Several wound contact materials have been identified as useful in the management of extravasation injuries in these patients.
