Managing psychosis in patients with Parkinson's disease

Article Abstract:

Clozapine appears to be effective in reducing psychotic symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease without worsening their Parkinson's symptoms. Many Parkinson's patients experience hallucinations and fears of persecution or personal endangerment. If they start taking an anti-psychotic drug, their Parkinson's symptoms may become worse. If the drug they take for Parkinson's is causing the psychotic symptoms, a reduction in the dose could also worsen their Parkinson's symptoms. A 1999 study found that clozapine could reduce psychotic symptoms without worsening Parkinson's disease. It did so at very low doses, which might prevent the adverse effects usually caused by clozapine.

Behcet's disease

Article Abstract:

Behcet's disease is characterized by the formation of ulcers in the mouth, genital tract and skin and it also affects the eyes. Its cause is not known but it is linked to the HLA-B51 gene. It appears to be an autoimmune disease that causes an inflammation of blood vessels. For this reason, anti-inflammatory drugs and immunosuppressive drugs are the most effective treatments. Topical corticosteroids are used for the skin ulcers and the drugs colchicine and thalidomide are effective for oral and genital ulcers.
