Managing the risk: forensic psychiatric nursing is one of the most challenging-and rewarding-specialities that nursing has to offer

Article Abstract:

Forensic psychiatric nursing covers the spectrum of special hospitals, medium and low security hospitals and community nursing, involving a wide variety of patients. The Special Hospitals Service Authority was recently abolished, being replaced by the High Security Psychiatric Services Commissioning Board, which will scrutinize prisons, secure units, probation teams, police stations and mainstream mental health services. Director, Ray Rowden has talked positively about the nursing in special hospitals, and wants to encourage a vibrant research programme with nurses acting as consultants and trainers. Ged McCann, county development officer for mentally disordered offenders in North Yorkshire believes that forensic psychiatric nurses will work in a wide range of community settings in the future.
