Many roads to midwifery: the development of direct-entry midwifery degree courses will provide an extra way into this rewarding career

Article Abstract:

There has been a move towards degree-level midwifery training but some feel that higher education can discriminate against certain groups such as ethnic minorities and mature students. The University of Brighton now offers a BSc in midwifery and there are currently 14 programmes of midwifery-related study approved by the English National Board for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting. Direct entry courses are more cost effective and it is believed that the Department of Health will back a small rise in training numbers for 1998.

Publicity coup

Article Abstract:

The UK mass media have given much attention to problems in the nursing profession yet applications to take nursing degree courses may, in 1998, be at their highest-ever level. Experts have been trying to account for this paradox. Some believe that it may be due to the government's decision to exempt nursing courses from tuition fees. Others feel that it may reflect the vocational commitment of young people. A positive effect of the publicity may be that it persuaded people of the certainty of a job after training.
