Marginal adaptability and fit of ceramic milled inlays

Article Abstract:

The Celay copy-milling system appears to make precisely-fitting ceramic fillings. Ceramic fillings must fit well to provide long wear. Researchers made 40 Celay copy-milled ceramic fillings for prepared cavities in resin blocks and cut the blocks lengthwise to measure the internal fit. The gap between the cavity wall and the ceramic filling ranged from 36 to 78 microns, which is within the acceptable limit of 100 microns. The internal gap was largest at the angle between the cavity walls and floor and smallest along the smooth surfaces of the cavity walls. The shape of the cavity did not affect the fit. Fillings in smaller cavities fit better than fillings in larger cavities.

Gallium alloy restorations in primary teeth: a 12-month study

Article Abstract:

Dental fillings made of a gallium alloy may be suitable for baby teeth but not for permanent teeth. Researchers evaluated several types of gallium alloys as restorative material. These compounds have been approved in Japan because of widespread concern over mercury in fillings. One year after these fillings had been placed in the baby teeth of 17 boys and girls, the surfaces had deteriorated significantly. This was especially true of the Class I fillings. Microscopic examination revealed that the surfaces were severely corroded.

Composite restoration wear analysis: conventional methods vs. three-dimensional laser digitizer

Article Abstract:

Researchers analyzed wear on a dental filling by making a cast of the restoration at six months, one year, and two years, and using a laser to make a three-dimensional image of the cast. This technique was more effective in analyzing wear than visual inspections.
