Massive congenital intracranial teratoma with skull rupture at delivery

Article Abstract:

The scalp of a 30 week-old infant with a massive brain tumor ruptured at delivery. On hospital admission of the 18-year-old mother in preterm labor, ultrasonography was performed which showed a fetus with severe hydrocephalus and brain lesions. An excess of maternal amniotic fluid was noted. As the baby was delivered by cesarean section, his skull ruptured, sending brain matter and cerebrospinal fluid in a gush through the fontanelle. Abnormal and uncontrolled growths of various types of tissues in this neonate had replaced the cerebral hemispheres of the brain, which is a rare occurrence.

Management of pregnancies beyond forty-one weeks' gestation with an unfavorable cervix

Article Abstract:

Prostaglandin gel and cervix manipulation appear to be effective in promoting labor in women beyond the 41st week of pregnancy. These techniques are used to ripen the cervix, allowing delivery of the infant. Researchers evaluated the two techniques along with daily cervical examinations (the control group) in 105 women with a pregnancy beyond the 41st week. Twenty percent or fewer patients in the groups receiving these techniques required labor induction compared to 69% of the control group.
