Medical resources on the Internet

Article Abstract:

Access to medical information and services may be much easier and more convenient with the widespread availability of the Internet. The Internet is a network of computer systems linking millions of computer users around the world. Many hospitals, universities, and research institutions make medical information available through the Internet. Computer users can gain access to these worldwide medical resources if they have a modem, appropriate software, and an access provider. A researcher reviewed the current procedures for accessing this medical information and what medical resources are available on the Internet. Some of these systems provide detailed information about specific medical topics and issues. There are other systems that provide educational materials to people in the health care field. On-line discussion groups can exchange medical information with one another. The quality of the material published over the Internet is regulated only by those providing it.

Internet-based medical information: time to take charge

Article Abstract:

Members of the health care profession need to prepare themselves for the changes that the Internet is making in the exchange of medical information. The Internet is a network of computer systems linking millions of computer users around the world. Hospitals, universities, research centers, government agencies, and any person with access to a computer can currently make medical information available to millions of computer users worldwide. No regulations exist to control the accuracy of the information published. Members of the medical profession need to become familiar with Internet technology in order to responsibly share research and general medical knowledge with the public. They also can take advantage of the information available to them. The health profession can help to educate the public in how to critically evaluate medical information they might read on the Internet. Medical journals should also prepare to publish their articles on the Internet.

Medical libraries today

Article Abstract:

Medical libraries and librarians are providing more services to help physicians access information quickly. The introduction of a software package called Grateful Med allowed physicians to do their own searchers rather than going through a librarian. Librarians have also created online information systems that provide access to bulletin boards, e-mail, patient records, databases and continuing education programs. Other libraries provide access to electronic journals and shift toward document delivery when journal subscription prices outpace budgets.
