Medical student education in managed care settings: beyond HMOs

Article Abstract:

Medical students might benefit from a clinical clerkship in an HMO. Researchers surveyed all US medical schools and visited 6 HMOs that offered clerkships. Clerkships in an HMO were required of all students at 16% of US medical schools in 1995 and 1996. Forty-six percent required some students to clerk in an HMO. Eighty-five percent placed students in other types of managed care settings during their clinical rotations. Five of the sites visited were owned or affiliated with a medical school.

Critical Factors for Designing Programs to Increase the Supply and Retention of Rural Primary Care Physicians

Article Abstract:

Recruiting medical students who grew up in rural areas and hope to practice there may be the best way to increase the number of doctors practicing in rural areas. The Physician Shortage Area Program (PSAP) of Jefferson Medical College was designed to recruit such students, but even students who did not enroll in PSAP were more likely to practice in rural areas as doctors if they originally came from a rural area.

Documenting and Comparing Medical Students' Clinical Experiences

Article Abstract:

A system for documenting medical students' experiences in different clerkships was evaluated by 647 third-year medical students at one hospital that had 16 teaching affiliates. The students recorded their experience in family medicine, pediatrics, and internal medicine on a pocket-sized computer-readable patient encounter card.
