Medicare cuts target graduate medical education

Article Abstract:

Clinton administration plans to cut $5.5 billion from Medicare spending for graduate medical education have generated protests from doctors and hospital administrators. Under the new plan, the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) would pay teaching hospitals standard per-resident rates, instead of using the current cost-based system. While the changes would correct some inequities in direct medical education funding, hospital officials say it punishes teaching hospitals. The Physician Payment Review Commission says Congress should limit the number of residencies that are funded.

Doctors need to do their homework

Article Abstract:

Physicians should beware of contracting with companies that offer to negotiate the terms of the doctors' services. Physicians should ask colleagues whether they have done business with the companies. Also, doctors should employ accountants and lawyers to examine the contracts. Unreliable companies may fail to make promised payments, or may offer medical services at too low a fee.
