Medicine, law urged to focus more on organ donations

Article Abstract:

The shortage of organ donors may ease if persons are reminded at appropriate times of the great need for them, says Sec of Health and Human Services Louis Sullivan. Health providers should not wait until death is imminent, when patients and family are distraught. Government incentive grants have been reduced from $2.7 million in 1986 to only $400,000 in 1992. Although donor payments remain illegal, a suggestion has been made to substitute non-cash inducements, such as reduced hospital bills or gifts to a favorite charity.
