Memantine in moderate-to-severe Alzheimer's disease

Article Abstract:

The drug memantine may be effective for treating Alzheimer's disease, according to a study of 181 patients. This drug blocks the NMDA receptor, which is believed to cause neurodegenerative disease when it is over-stimulated. The patients who took the drug had higher scores on tests of intellectual ability, function, and behavior than patients who took a placebo, or inactive substance.
