Methadone effects on zidovudine disposition (AIDS Clinical Trials Group 262)

Article Abstract:

Methadone slows the metabolism and excretion of zidovudine (AZT) when both drugs are given together. Methadone is used for heroin addiction, and zidovudine is an antiviral drug used in the treatment of HIV infection. Researchers studied the interaction of the drugs in 8 heroin addicts with HIV. Consistent oral methadone treatment caused blood levels of zidovudine to remain higher, and decreased clearance of zidovudine from the body by 26%. HIV patients taking both drugs may experience more side effects, so lower zidovudine doses may be indicated during methadone therapy.

A pilot study of once-daily antiretroviral therapy integrated with tuberculosis directly observed therapy in a resource-limited settin

Article Abstract:

A pilot study in an urban tuberculosis (TB) clinic in South Africa was conducted to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of integrating highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) into existing tuberculosis directly observed therapy (TB/DOT) programs. The results suggest that these programs can be feasible and effective sites for HIV identification, and the introduction and monitoring of a once-daily HAART regimen in resource-limited settings.

Interaction of methadone with didanosine and stavudine

Article Abstract:

Methadone appears to delay the absorption of some AIDS drugs, according to a study of 17 drug addicts. HIV-infected drug addicts on methadone may need to take larger doses of AIDS drugs.
