Minimizing patients' exposure to uncured components in a dental sealant

Article Abstract:

Dentists should use a mild abrasive such as pumice to remove all uncured components in dental restorative materials. Pit and fissure sealants are most likely to leave uncured components. Many restorative material contains methacrylate, which is known to cause allergy in some patients. The uncured material leach into saliva, dental pulp or mucosal membranes. Pumice eliminated 95% of uncured material in a study comparing an air/water spray, application of a wet or dry cotton roll, or pumice on a cotton pellet or in a water/pumice slurry.

How well does the Chemiclave sterilize handpieces?

Article Abstract:

The Chemiclave chemical sterilization system may not be completely effective on small high-speed handpieces. Six high-speed handpieces and 12 low-speed handpieces were contaminated with Bacillus stearothermophilus and then sterilized with Chemiclave models EC 5500 and 8000 and an autoclave. Both Chemiclave models were effective on handpieces with large lumens but not on handpieces with small lumens. The autoclave sterilized all handpieces effectively.
