Initiating a patient service partner program

Article Abstract:

An Iowa hospital's implementation of a patient service partner (PSP) program combining the duties of housekeeping, nurse technicians, and food service into a single job, successfully enhanced both nurse and patient satisfaction. Surveyed patients found their needs were met more effectively and nurses found the PSP program offered them more time to perform duties such as patient education and response to patient calls. The addition of PSPs, whose duties included meal service, cleaning, patient transport, and supply management also improved cost savings and service efficiency.

Developing a competency test for ambulatory care nurses

Article Abstract:

A hospital nursing staff developed standards to test competency for nurses in an ambulatory care ward. Test criteria included evaluating ability in patient preparation, physician assistance, diagnostic tests, and response to physicians and patient requests. The instrument, called the Internal Medicine Knowledge Appraisal, showed clear differences between experienced nurses and those having just completed training, and indicated the need for improved education about blood glucose levels.
