Improving the process of care: the cost-quality value of interdisciplinary collaboration

Article Abstract:

A successful interdisciplinary team has been created to improve care and reduce costs for the orthopedic unit at Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, MA. The group has been able to reduce length of stay and costs while sustaining a high level of patient satisfaction. Many communication and coordination problems have been resolved simply by forming the work team, but results have been enhanced by the team's effective collaboration, its nonhierarchical and egalitarian format and demonstrated flexibility and innovation in solving problems.
