Molecular switch triggers fats' harm

Article Abstract:

Researchers studying rats and mice identified the molecular mechanism by which saturated and trans-fats trigger a rise in blood cholesterol and triglycerides, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease in humans. The researchers found that saturated and trans-fats in the diet induce a molecule called PGC-1beta, to set into action biochemical signals in the liver, which results in the production of very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

The global burden of chronic diseases: overcoming impediments to prevention and control

Article Abstract:

The influence of global economic factors on chronic diseases, which is the largest cause of death led by cardiovascular disease, is discussed. A more concreted, strategic and multisectrol policy approach is considered essential to reverse the negative trends in the global incidence of chronic disease.
