Scientific rationale for a change in the composition of oral rehydration solution

Article Abstract:

Oral rehydration solution (ORS) programs for the treatment and prevention of diarrhea-associated rehydration, which has played a vital role in reducing the diarrhea death rate, are discussed. A randomized controlled trail established the superiority of reduced-osmolarity ORS over standard ORS in the management of diarrheal disease in children.

Is this child dehydrated?

Article Abstract:

The precision and accuracy of symptoms, signs, and basic laboratory tests for evaluating dehydration in infants and children are reviewed. The initial assessment of dehydration in young children should focus on estimating capillary refill time, skin turgor, and respiratory pattern and using combinations of other signs.
