Monoclonal antibody therapies shine in breast cancer clinical trials

Article Abstract:

Large clinical studies presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology revealed that chemotherapy plus monoclonal antibodies against particular proteins involved in cancer progression offer improved progression-free and overall survival for women with early-stage or metastatic breast cancer compared with chemotherapy alone. The findings suggest that such targeted biological agents could be considered as a component of standard treatments in the fight against many forms of cancer.

Breast and colon cancer genomes sequenced

Article Abstract:

Scientists have analyzed the genetic code for breast and colorectal cancers finding close to 200 key mutated genes within these cancers. Though revealing a cancer's genetic cause does not often lead to a cure, researchers are confident that finding the genes associated with tumor initiation, growth, and spread can lay the groundwork for studies that could lead to better diagnostics and treatments.

Surgeons "vote with their feet" for sentinel node biopsy for breast cancer staging

Article Abstract:

Many surgeons are adopting sentinel node biopsy for treating breast cancer even though this technique has not been evaluated in long-term clinical trials. This technique involves removing the lymph node closest to the breast and examining it for signs of cancer. In the past, surgeons would remove all the lymph nodes, which would cause arm pain and swelling.
