More emphasis urged on spotting, treating sleep disorders

Article Abstract:

Many common sleep disorders remain undiagnosed for years because physicians are ignorant about them, according to a report by the National Commission on Sleep Disorders. Sleep disorders, which affect 40 million people, cost the US $15.9 billion per year. The commission recommended that the federal government expand its sleep disorder research activity, establish specific offices in the Depts of Labor, Transportation and Defense to deal with sleep disorder problems, support training for sleep disorder specialists, and assist in increasing awareness of the problem among health care workers.
