More nurses, more patients, more work

Article Abstract:

A community mental health nursing census indicates that mental health nurses are dealing with 66% more patients 1996 than in 1990 yet there are only 52% more community mental health nurses (CMHN) in England and Wales. Almost twice as many nurses are working in grade D, E and F grade posts than in 1990. The census shows that almost 70% of trusts monitor the service they provide by conducting patient surveys, holding patient councils or advocacy schemes. Forty seven percent of CMHNs discuss cases with staff in general hospitals.

Live through this

Article Abstract:

It can be very difficult to distinguish between unhappiness and true depression. Being unhappy is a natural part of the human condition, and does not require any specific treatment. Similarly, mild depression does not necessarily require active intervention. Being unhappy does not make a person ill, and it is important to avoid the temptation to pathologize and medicalize ordinary human emotions just because people find them unpleasant.
