More talk, less squawk!

Article Abstract:

Mediation is one solution to avoiding high legal costs and strained professional relationships. Mediation allows disputing parties to arrive at a mutually acceptable solution through the aid of a mediator, whose only function is to monitor the process. A mediator will help parties discover common ground that can lead to solutions. The key to mediation success is helping people see disputes from a different perspective. Unlike arbitration, no solution is imposed upon participants. The Center for Health Care Negotiation is a firm in Boston, MA, that arranges mediation.

Networking physicians

Article Abstract:

Physicians will be allowed to form networks according to provisions in the House Medicare legislation passed in October 1995. The networks, or provider-sponsored organizations, could span the gamut from loosely bound independent practice associations to physician-hospital organizations with a tightly integrated format. Insurers oppose the measures, charging unfair competition. Federal and state regulators cite concerns regarding competition between plans and the potential impact to consumer protections.

New Medicare coding guides ready; doctors may not be

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Association (AMA) and other medical organizations are requesting a second grace period for new Medicare documentation standards for evaluation and management services. The first grace period delayed enforcement from Oct 1, 1997, to Jan 1, 1998. The AMA wants more time to educate physicians on the guidelines. Other medical groups argue the guidelines do not accurately reflect physicians' work situations and have threatened legal action.
