Mothering instinct

Article Abstract:

The Community Mothers Programme implemented in the poor urban housing estates of Clondalkin in Dublin, Ireland, has been successful in empowering parents. The programme involved trained and experienced mothers giving support to parents in bringing up children. The programme focused on nutrition, health care, language, and both cognitive and social development. The programme resulted in mothers in the interventive group having greater self-esteem than those of the control group. More mothers also breast-fed babies, and 98% read to their children, vs only 54% of in the control group.

Has the public health white paper gone too far?

Article Abstract:

The debate over the Public health white paper, which aims to counter rising obesity, alcohol consumption, smoking and poor sexual health in the society, is presented. This document seems to be misfocused and it does not go far enough, and has missed a great opportunity to make a huge impact on health inequalities.
