Move over doctor

Article Abstract:

Plans to introduce walk-in healthcare units in the UK, mainly operated by nurses, has led to a call for the training of nurses to include work traditionally carried out by doctors. The government is backing the introduction of nurse-led health centres and seeking applications from primary care groups to establish pilot schemes. Other schemes are promoting the use of nurses, with some operating a policy whereby up to 60% of patients are dealt with directly by practice nurses.

A painful legacy

Article Abstract:

Nurses should have an awareness of genetic services and counselling, in order to help their patients adequately, according to the education commission of the UKCC. According to a nursing practice adviser from the Royal College of Nursing, Rosie Wilkinson, knowledge of genetic diseases is variable although some nurses know a lot about certain genetic diseases, such as sickle cell disorders among African or Afro-Caribbean patients and cystic fibrosis.
